February's Heavy New Moon Is a Chance to Break Free

We tend to think of January as the moment in which we'll kick off a whole new year with bold, take-charge action, but that has been fairly impossible this year, thanks to not one but two retrogrades — Venus and Mercury — pulling our attention backward. Thankfully, February offers up a whole different vibe that'll make it easier to plow ahead. And even though Mercury will technically still be moving backward until February 3, a forward-thinking new moon hits on January 31-February 1 (depending on your time zone) in the progressive fixed air sign Aquarius.

Underøath’s Chris Dudley Discusses ‘Voyeurist,’ Film Scoring, & Pancakes

Earlier this month Aquarian writer Ray Romanski wrote that “Underøath cannot be chained down.” Then he went ahead and proved his point in conversation with them. Underøath released their ninth studio album, Voyeurist, just a few weeks ago, and the consensus here is that it is all killer, no filler. Keyboardist Chris Dudley met with us via Zoom for a chat about this new album right after it dropped, but he also found time to talk about Dudley’s side hustle as a film scorer, new pets, and more.

AQUARIUS(Jan. 20-Feb.18) Since the iconoclastic planet Uranus is a chief symbol for the Aquarian tribe, you people are more likely to be dissenters and mavericks and questioners than all the other signs. That doesn't mean that your departures from orthodoxy are always successful or popular. Sometimes you meet resistance from the status quo. Having offered that caveat, I'm happy to announce that in the coming weeks, your unique offerings are more likely than usual to be effective. For inspiration, read these observations by author Kristine Kathryn Rusch: "Rebels learn the rules better than the rule-makers do. Rebels learn where the holes are, where the rules can best be breached. Become an expert at the rules. Then break them with creativity and style."

“The flap of a wave; the kiss of a wave.” 8 of the best uses of water in Virginia Woolf’s novels.

My fellow and favorite Aquarian, Virginia Woolf, would have turned 140 today. And given Aquarius’ water-bearing status, is it any surprise that we find water—in metaphors, in imagery, in rhythm, in flux, in just about everything—throughout Woolf’s novels? Not at all. And given Aquarius’ reputation as esoteric and eccentric, is it any surprise that looking through Woolf’s writing about water—and her use of watery imagery—takes us on a complicated dive (yes, pun intended) into loneliness, melancholy, sexuality, time, girlhood, and loss? So to honor Woolf on her birthday, I have gathered eight of the best watery scenes in her novels for you to plunge into (again, pun intended). Enjoy:
