Animal Crossing is teaching pandemic babies what museums are

Yet another reason why Animal Crossing has been a bright spot in the pandemic. We’ve heard it our whole lives: “Video games rot your brain, they’re not productive, they’re a waste of time…” I could go on, but you get the idea. In a lot of cases, though, playing games can be an enriching experience, especially when we’re stuck inside during a global pandemic. I came across a post on Reddit today that kind of blew my mind — a parent posted a heartfelt “thank you” to Animal Crossing, because the game taught their seven-year-old daughter what a museum is.

Even if you usually play your Nintendo Switch in docked mode, there will be times when you use it as a handheld or on the go. Maybe you want to toss it in a backpack or stuff it in a suitcase. When the time comes, you need a case, right? You don’t want to start your vacation with a busted Switch, because then what will you do? Talk to other people? Take in the sights? There are more than 2.7 billion gamers worldwide, and the market will surpass $200 billion by 2023. Unilever, the global company with some truly iconic brands, is gunning for it. Last year, Hellmann’s and Animal Crossing: New Horizons joined forces for a charity event; Venus, the women’s razor brand, also spent some time with Animal Crossing, creating realistic, inclusive skins for player characters, a campaign that measured nearly 1 billion impressions. Across the pond, Axe sponsored some top gamers, and in China, they’re sponsoring wildly popular e-sport celebrities  and leagues — and there’s more.

Where Are all of the Slice-of-Life Video Games?

Slice-of -ife stories are everywhere, it seems. The vast majority of all sitcoms, 4-panel comics, romance and comedy TV shows, are just that. So are lots of books and anime, to not say anything about reality TV and IRL livestreams. We seem to be enamoured by the idea that a piece of media could show us life as it is, especially when that piece of media has all the talent and money behind it as a Netflix original. And while the obsession with realism that dominates the current media landscape goes far beyond this one genre, it is undeniable how much the popularity of the slice-of-life story has influenced modern storytelling.
