I've been sober 18 months. After years of destroying myself with addiction, here's how I finally gave up alcohol for good

My rock bottom came just after the first lockdown was announced in March 2020. I was desperately off my head, it was six o clock in the morning, and my night of “fun” which had started with a couple of friends, had ended – yet again – with me alone, awake, the birds chirping and the voices in my head shouting at me with unadulterated loathing. Here you are again Melanie. Look at you. Loser. Why does it always end this way? Why can’t you just be normal and end the night when everyone else does? Why are you always the one who can’t stop?
