4 Nigerian-themed Restaurants in Texas

It's not news that Texas has become a kind of hot spot for Nigerians, with over 40,000 Nigerians living there, it's easily the state with the highest population of Nigerians. New York coming in close second with about 35,000. So, it's to be expected that such a state will be teeming with restaurants and spots that serve delicacies indigenous to the West African country and her people. Below, some of them are reviewed.

This Oakland-Based Supper Series Proves Pan-African Cuisine Is More Than a Trend

Bussdown chefs Solomon Johnson and Mike Woods debut OKO, a high-end, multi-course Pan-African supper series. When chefs Solomon Johnson and Mike Woods met in Oakland in 2017, both had spent ample time in fine-dining kitchens. Johnson, who hails from Maryland, attended culinary school in Philadelphia and started his career working for restaurateur Steven Starr at eateries in Philadelphia and New York. Woods, who was born and raised in Oakland, moved east to Maryland for school before working in Daniel Patterson’s restaurants in the Bay Area and traveling and staging at restaurants around the world.

I haven’t been to London for months. Why bother. It’s just as expensive as always, and isn’t it empty now, the commuter belt armies uprooting to their sheds and spare rooms? I haven’t been to a restaurant in London for even longer. Why bother. Aren’t all the good’uns now in rural villages or hugging a coastline somewhere in the South West? That’s what I’ve been told. Chefs saying “to hell” with the metropolitan smog and tenant strangulation by swinish landlord thugs, choosing instead to venture beyond, out into the hinterland where they can farm-forage-pick-and-pull at the land themselves. But just as the umpteenth lockdown was lifted, I was tempted back in, to St James’s Market – to Ikoyi.

Last fall, in the thick of the pandemic, Claudia Wanki was searching online for restaurant spaces to lease. She noticed one in a shopping center along South Soto Street in Boyle Heights. It had previously housed Puertos Del Pacifico, which specialized in mariscos.
