Abbott Elementary Premiere Recap: Grade ABC's School Teacher Comedy

ABC’s Abbott Elementary is set at a deeply underfunded school, but Tuesday’s series premiere is not lacking when it comes to laughs. The comedy stars A Black Lady Sketch Show‘s Quinta Brunson (who also wrote the pilot) as Janine Teagues, a second grade teacher at a Philadelphia public school that can’t even afford textbooks that include the last three presidents so Janine tapes them into the back pages. Her colleagues include Barbara Howard (Moesha‘s Sheryl Lee Ralph), an elegant, older kindergarten teacher who actually commands respect from her students without needing to count to 40; second grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti (The...

ABC’s ‘Abbott Elementary’: TV Review

The first episode of Abbott Elementary, set in a perpetually cash-strapped public school, ends with one of its teachers savoring a minor victory. “I was called, I answered, and now I know, even with no help from the higher-ups and no help from the city, I can get this job done,” she says proudly. Then the episode cuts away to another minor setback — this one involving a toilet that sprays jets of water when flushed — and back to the teacher. “But money would still be nice, though,” she adds. Abbott Elementary is full of moments like that, that mine comedy...

How Quinta Brunson Created Her Own Kind of Mockumentary Comedy With ‘Abbott Elementary’

If you only rely on news headlines, there doesn’t seem to be anything fun, let alone funny, about the state of America’s school system. From shootings and shelter-in-place drills, to cheating on admissions applications and lack of funding, it can be hard not to get discouraged by a broken system. But only focusing on the system and salacious or scandalous moments ignores the humanity behind it all, including the very special teachers who go above and beyond to set young students up for success from their earliest ages. Those individuals get the spotlight in Quinta Brunson’s new mockumentary-style comedy “Abbott...

Why the Stars of Abbott Elementary Welcome Comparisons to The Office

The stars of Abbott Elementary have no problem with their show being compared to The Office or Parks and Recreation. On Tuesday, Dec. 7, ABC will premiere a new mockumentary-style comedy about a group of teachers trying to do their best while working at a Philadelphia-based public school with little funding. And while that may not sound anything like the aforementioned NBC comedies, a trailer for the show hints that Abbott Elementary is likely following the same TV formula.

‘Abbott Elementary,’ From Quinta Brunson, Makes a Smart First Impression: TV Review

As hard as it is for any TV show to start on a strong note, it’s doubly hard for comedies, which depend so much on cast and writers’ room chemistry to truly click into gear. You wouldn’t know it, though, from watching the first few episodes of “Abbot Elementary,” ABC’s new sitcom that manages to feel fully formed from the get go. From comedian Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary” makes quick work of introducing its setting (an underfunded Philly school), characters (the frustrated teachers trying to make it work), and the intangible sense of history and possibility that keep any show compelling...

Abbott Elementary

It only takes a hit — or at least a good show — to revive a tired format. It’s too early to call “Abbott Elementary” (8:30 p.m., ABC, TV-PG) a hit, but the exciting pilot breathes new life into the single-camera docustyle sitcom.

TV's Best Bets

“Abbott Elementary” debut, 9:30 p.m., ABC. A slow year for situation comedies is suddenly brightening. Too terrific ones get advance peeks — “Abbott” tonight and NBC’s “American Auto” next Monday — before getting weekly spots next month. Quinta Brunson created this, produces it and stars as an earnest elementary-school teacher. Indeed, all the teachers here try hard, despite meager funding and a clueless principal. The result manages to be both warm and funny.
