Sequoia trees are thought to be the oldest living things on Earth, so it's appropriate that Toyota's full-size SUV is named for them: The soon-to-be-outgoing Sequoia dates from 2008, and over the three thousand years—okay, 13—it's been on sale, we've watched it slip from first to last in comparison to its competitors. Finally, it looks like a new Sequoia sapling is born: Toyota has revealed the 2023 Sequoia, with a few surprises that make it feel like an SUV for the ages.

Toyota on Tuesday revealed a redesigned 2023 Sequoia and confirmed the new full-size SUV for a showroom appearance this summer. Last redesigned for the 2008 model year, the Sequoia was definitely in need of renewal. The good news is that this isn't a simple update but a ground-up redesign where nothing is shared with the outgoing model.

The Toyota Sequoia is about to give up its "oldest SUV" title in a big way. The current model that’s been on sale since 2008 is being replaced by an all-new full-size truck built on the same platform that underpins the latest Tundra pickup and Lexus LX and is set to match up against vehicles like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition and Jeep Wagoneer.

The all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia has a lot of work to do if it has any chance of catching up with the sales leaders in the full-size SUV segment. As is the case with the 2022 Toyota Tundra upon which it’s based, the Japanese automaker’s biggest vehicles just don’t come close to the sales figures of their American competitors.

It's got 437 hp, 583 lb-ft of torque, and Fox internal bypass shocks as standard. But there's more to it than that. I've yet to meet an off-road junkie who doesn't have some reverence for the Toyota Land Cruiser. New or old, some model somewhere along the line has wedged its way into the hearts of anybody who's ever dropped a transfer case into 4LO on purpose. But the legendary off-roader is now gone from the United States, though, and since the 300 Series Land Cruiser was launched internationally last summer, we've felt left out. The 2022 Toyota Sequoia was revealed last month, and to say that we were disappointed is an understatement. While there's an all-new Tundra pickup for Ford and Chevy to fret over, the latest Sequoia arrived with hardly any changes. There could be many reasons for this, from the global semiconductor chip shortage forcing Toyota to reevaluate timelines to the possibility that other vehicles like the recently revealed bZ4X were more important. Whatever the reason, Toyota hasn't forgotten about its pickup-based SUV. New spy shots from a Toyota-loving Instagram account reveal that the Japanese automaker is deep in development on the 2023 model, with a new Tundra following the prototype around as support.
