Five Rides @ 60 Seconds, Epic Puerto Escondido (More Tomorrow!)

Vid: Edwin Morales (land); Matias Hinkle (drone) The Pacific forecast team called it last week — another XXL swell in the South Pacific, this one better aimed at South America than the Code Red II swell that hit Tahiti in July. It showed up on cue, sending the biggest surf in years to the Punta Lobos big-wave event on Monday. Couple days later, that same swell started detonating on Puerto Escondido’s shifting sandbars, offering up the best day of the year so far. Tomorrow looks even better. And later this week into the weekend, that same energy — though greatly diminished due to its extreme southerly angle — will make its way up the West Coast. We will document the whole journey, but in the meantime, above is a five-wave sample platter from this morning.

Hawaii's Southern Exposures Return to Form

Best SSW swell of the last month arrives over the weekend. Mostly favorable conditions for southern shores with offshore ENE trades. It’s been a minute for the Hawaiian Islands. Following the Code Red II swell in mid-July, it’s been a bit of a slog for Hawaii’s southern shores. There were a handful of fun days, but generally small for the last month — especially when stacked up against the swells that rolled in through the first half of summer. That changes this weekend as a new SSW swell fills in – we’ll see a building trend of long-period forerunners through Saturday with the swell peaking Sunday. Monday will see slowly easing swell but it will be quite fun throughout the day. Conditions for this run of waves look good, provided by steady tradewinds that are typical for this time of year.
