Baseball: Ararat hangs on against Andy Valley to win 11U Cal Ripken state championship

HARRISON — Andy Valley never gave up, inching closer and closer to Ararat’s big lead in the sixth inning. Landon Springer, Ararat’s relief pitcher, gave up a few runs but after a visit by teammates and head coach AJ Kavanaugh at the mound, he struck out the final batter to earn Ararat a 5-4 victory and the 11U Maine Cal Ripken state championship Wednesday night.

Pallet catches fire at Lewiston store

LEWISTON — A Lisbon Street bottle redemption store was singed Wednesday afternoon when a pallet loaded with boxes went up in flames at about 1 p.m. A fire investigator said that the blaze at RC Redemption and Beverage Center, at 700 Lisbon St. was caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials.

PARIS — Following the defeat of an amendment to the property maintenance ordinance at last week’s town meeting, the Board of Selectmen on Monday pondered its next step. The ordinance, which was overwhelmingly passed by residents at a special town meeting in 2020, set a “minimum standard for the maintenance of the grounds and buildings of a property in order to protect public health, public safety and to prevent nuisance conditions.”

Former Auburn police officer revives 2 men after apparent drug overdoses

AUGUSTA — A former Auburn police officer revived two men who had apparently overdosed on drugs last week. Gary Boulet, who was a patrol sergeant with the Auburn Police Department before he joined the Bureau of Capitol Police in 2018, was on patrol near the Riverview Psychiatric Hospital when a hospital worker approached him Friday evening, according to a statement by Maine Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Shannon Moss.

A season of parity in the Super Late Model division continued Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway, and it was a familiar face with the biggest smile in victory lane. Veteran driver and former track champion Tim Brackett beat out 16 other competitors to win the 50-lap SLM feature, capturing his first win of the season. Brackett became the eighth different winner in nine weekly division features, and 10th in 11 overall SLM races (weekly and Pro All Stars Series combined) at the track this season. Only rookie Max Cookson has won multiple features this season.
