A Michigan family confronts police injustice, drugs and gender identity in 'North By Current'

Some of the most compelling documentaries begin as one thing and end up something else entirely. Just ask Angelo Madsen Minax, whose “North By Current” began as an investigation surrounding the death of his 2-year-old niece. The feature, which plays Thursday at the Detroit Film Theatre as part of the Freep Film Festival, eventually turned into a portrait of his family, himself included, over nearly five years.

Blackberry Smoke brings Southern spirit to Sterling Heights

Blackberry Smoke’s latest album, “You Hear Georgia,” turned into a pandemic silver lining for the Atlanta rock quintet. “I was really excited this time,” frontman Charlie Starr says by phone. “I’d written a bunch of songs, then lockdown comes along and I wrote some more with friends who were all in the same boat — ‘I’m just sitting around. Let’s do something. Let’s write a song. Let’s collaborate somehow.’ That turned into some really good songs that might not have been written otherwise.”
