Sleeping Giant principal resigns; Interim interviews expected next week

The Steamboat Springs School District is looking for a new leader at Sleeping Giant School after principal Jennifer Malouff resigned on Friday, Aug. 5. In a letter to parents sent on Monday, Aug. 8, new Superintendent Celine Wicks said the resignation doesn’t come at an ideal time, but added that the interim principal role had already been posted and that interviews would happen next week.

SBT GRVL returns Aug. 12-14

The Steamboat Gravel (SBT GRVL) ride returns to Steamboat Aug. 12-13 with 3,000 riders of all abilities from all 50 states and 24 countries. This is the fourth year for the world class gravel race in and around Steamboat Springs and Routt County. Gravel riding is a growing sport where competitors ride on unpaved roads including dirt, gravel, and mixed-surface terrain.

Steamboat Resort asking for artist submissions for installation at base area

Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. is seeking submissions from artists for a large, outdoor installation with the theme of “what makes you feel welcome in the outdoors.”. The piece is intended to do more than beautify the base area at the resort, but “celebrate the outdoors as a place where all are welcome to play and encourage reflection on collaboration,” according to the resort’s website.

Northwest Colorado awarded $8.5M to economically diversify coal communities

The U.S. Department of Commerce on Tuesday awarded $8.5 million to northwest Colorado to support the region’s efforts to diversify local coal-dependent economies. The grants are part of the federal Coal Communities Commitment from the Economic Development Administration — allocating $300 million from the COVID-19 American Rescue Plan Act to support coal communities as they recover from the pandemic. The program aims to help communities create new jobs and opportunities as coal mines and power plants close throughout the nation.

Train engine fire in Phippsburg puts volunteers into action

A few feet above a fuel reservoir with a capacity of 40,000 gallons, the engine pulling a Union Pacific coal train caught fire Tuesday, Aug. 9, en route through Phippsburg. Yampa Fire Protection is comprised of volunteers exclusively, and they had to drop whatever they were doing at about 3 p.m. Tuesday to quickly get to the burning train.

Ekphrasis 2022

On Thursday, July 21, 2022 members of our talented Steamboat Springs writers community gathered at Steamboat Art Museum for the reading of this years' Ekphrasis visual writing event, presented by Steamboat Magazine and Off the Beaten Path Bookstore. Set against the backdrop of the art that inspired the writing, the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition of Traditional Oils, winning entries from both adult and youth categories were read by local Steamboat celebrities.

Featuring nine short and feature-length films, the free 2022 International Fly Fishing Film Festival will be in Steamboat Springs on Aug. 19. On Wednesday, February 9th, a few high school students encountered a mountain lion attacking an elk in Routt County, Colorado.
