Man finds body while searching for brother’s dog after crash, deputies say

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Alexander County deputies said a man found a body while searching for his brother’s dog after a crash. According to investigators, a man was hospitalized after a crash Tuesday morning along County Home Road near Taylorsville. Deputies said the man’s dog, which was with him at the time of the crash, ran away from the accident scene, so the victim’s brother went back to the scene to find the dog.

Sold-out Dead & Company show cancelled

September 28, 2021 - The sold-out Oct. 7 concert by Dead & Company, with John Mayer and surviving members of the Grateful Dead, has been cancelled. The Mid-Florida Credit Union performance, as well as the Oct. 6 show in West Palm Beach, were scrubbed due to "routing issues." The tour continues with an Oct. 11 concert in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Car crash results in body being found in Alexander County woods, sheriff says

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — The Alexander County Sheriff's Office said a crash scene took a grim turn Tuesday morning after a body was found in a wooded area near the scene. Sheriff Chris Bowman confirmed to WCNC Charlotte a car had crashed into a tree around 7:30 a.m., and the driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Bowman said the driver's brother was called to the scene to stay with the wrecked car and find the driver's dog, which had run away.

Surgeon used wife’s NC truffle business to hide income from the IRS, jury finds

A decade-long scheme to defraud the Internal Revenue Service has resulted in a guilty verdict against an orthopedic surgeon and his truffle farming wife in North Carolina. James and Susan Rice were found guilty on all counts following 40 minutes of deliberation and a four-day trial in the Middle District of North Carolina, according to federal court filings. The pair is accused of skirting employment and income taxes from 2007 to 2016 and using the money to pay for personal expenses — including a “luxury” dog kennel, trips to Aruba and visits with a spiritual adviser.

PEEKING INTO THE PAST: First Baptist Church of Locust

According to the Stanly Baptist Association, after a time of meeting each week under a brush arbor, the Baptists of Locust Level moved their meetings to the new public school in 1883. The following year the church was formally organized as First Baptist Church of Locust Level. Rev. W.G. Morton became the first pastor.
