Mason City man arrested for second-degree robbery

MASON CITY, Iowa - A Mason City man was arrested for second-degree robbery following an incident Friday night. Police said Derek Rafael, 27, was in the 600 block of N. Pennsylvania Ave. when he claimed he was going to purchase an Xbox. The victim then attempted to leave before he was assaulted.

Wingers swim and dive take third in Austin

The Red Wing girls swim and dive team competed in the Austin Invitational on Saturday and earned third place out of six teams. The Wingers had a score of 387. Century won the invite with a score of 657. Austin was in second with 397.5 and Winona was in fourth with a 383.5.

Northern Iowa Counties Split On Hog Confinements

A few new hog confinements were a topic of discussion in two county board meetings this week as residents spoke up in opposition. Over in Hancock County, Summit Pork has two buildings planned which will both house just under 5,000 head of hogs. Each of these facilities would be six-tenths of a mile from the water in Torkelson Pits Wildlife Area.

A suspect has been released on bond after his arrest in connection with a shooting Aug. 9 in Rock Falls. According to a news release, Rock Falls Police responded to a residence in the 900 block of West 5th Street about 10:13 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, after a report of gunfire and one person injured.

Spring Grove girls turn away Grand Meadow, 3-0

The Spring Grove volleyball girls scored five of the final six points to overtake visiting Grand Meadow in the first set and then went on to less dramatic decisions in the next two sets to sweep the Superlarks, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) on Sept. 22. Homeless man accused of stealing truck from Mason City driveway

MASON CITY — A homeless man has been jailed in Cerro Gordo County after stealing a truck. A criminal complaint states that at about 6:30 on Wednesday morning, 24-year-old Logan Conway allegedly approached a residence in the 1600 block of Opal Drive in Mason City, loaded his bicycle into the back of a truck in the driveway and drove away. The owner of the vehicle says they watched the vehicle leave and that the keys were left in the vehicle.
