Letters: St. James' industrial development damages the lives of Black residents

Five years ago, I received a call from Pastor Harry Joseph inviting me to his church in St. James to discuss concerns about the Bayou Bridge pipeline being rammed into the parish. In the subsequent years, I have attended dozens of St. James Parish Council meetings in which Black residents stand and tell the council that they are sick and tired of the pollution and illness that industry brings. The council members sit impassively. Some check their phones.

Opelousas, Donaldsonville men killed in St. James Parish crash

State Police are investigating a fatal crash Thursday afternoon in St. James Parish that left a St. Landry Parish man and an Ascension Parish man dead. 50-year-old James Breaux of Donaldsonville and 33-year-old Daniel Thomas of Opelousas were killed in the crash, which Troopers say occurred on I-10 East of LA Hwy 641.

St. James Sheriff’s Office investigates Vacherie shooting

On May 31, 2021, at 10:53pm, the St. James Sheriff’s Office received several calls in reference to shots being fired on Magnolia Heights Street, in Vacherie. One of the calls stated an individual was shot in the head. Deputies arrived on scene and discovered one person shot in the head who was alert and breathing. The subject was transported to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

WALLACE — The Descendants Project is pleased to partner with New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) in providing film industry training for local residents. Through a combination of virtual and on location training, residents will have the opportunity to participate in training such as production assistant training and script supervision if accepted. Applications are available online and are due by Monday, May 24.
