Are you ready for a rewarding and challenging opportunity of community service? The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department is currently seeking Volunteer Firefighters.Entry level firefighters must complete state mandated training, be willing to respond to fire/rescue emergencies under adverse conditions, have the ability to operate department equipment, and participate in department drills and training. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, must be at least 18 years old, maintain a primary residence within a 10-minute drive to the fire station, and possess a valid driver’s license. Volunteer firefighters receive a $5,750 pension per year of service (there are vesting requirements) and receive $10 per call.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The sun has set on the August special election, and the vacant seat in Minnesota’s First Congressional District has at last been filled. Republican Brad Finstad of New Ulm defeated Democrat Jeff Ettinger of Austin and will serve the rest of the late Jim Hagedorn’s term.

This year’s Cottonwood County Fair will have many of the events and activities locals are accustomed to and a handful of new features for all ages to enjoy. Wednesday kicks off the week with the 4-H horse show at 8 a.m. in the Arena. 4-H shows featuring goats, sheep, lambs, rabbits, poultry, dairy and swine all follow throughout the day. The 4-H Food Stand opens at 10 a.m. and commercial exhibits open at 5 p.m.

A former rural Winthrop man accused of making a threat against a New Ulm doctor in April 2021 received a stay of adjudication Monday in Brown County District Court. A stay of adjudication allows an individual to avoid jail time and keep their public criminal record clear. Ronal Schoenborn was arrested near the New Ulm Medical Center in April 2023. He was charged with felony threats of violence and misdemeanor disorderly conduct after having signs attached to his vehicle including one that offered a $500 reward for Dr. Randeep Dahmi being brought to him unharmed. Officers found five $100 bills in Schoenborn’s possession. He was fined $500, sentenced to one-year supervised probation and ordered to serve four days in jail, credited with time served. Probation conditions include no contact with the victim, contacting or visiting the victim’s place of employment or be within five blocks of the New Ulm Medical Center.

Kathleen Backer came away with the win in Tuesday’s Primary election in the New Ulm Mayoral race. Backer received 61.7% of the vote to Ron Wendinger’s 24.7%. Both will proceed to the general election in November. Jeff Kiecker received 160 votes, Lonny Luepke 126 and Mark Rutz 80. Election judges at New Ulm’s four ward election precincts reported a strong voter turnout with the mayoral primary and the special congressional election.

Todd Pack played plenty of baseball in his youth, and some of his fondest memories on the diamond were made in Tracy — especially 50 years ago, during the summer of 1972. Pack was one of the premier ballplayers in the region in the 1970s; at the time, he lived in Walnut Grove, and in 1972 had to make the decision to play Legion ball either in Tracy or Lamberton.

Larry Boyd, 79, of Walnut Grove passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, in Mercy Hospital of a sudden illness. Boyd was born in Springfield, on Sept. 25, 1942, to Robert C. and Wilma (Perryman) Boyd. He was a lifelong resident of Walnut Grove. On June 7, 1963, Boyd married Jo Boggs and to this union three children were born.

Esther Windschitl age 75, of Comfrey, MN, died on August 7, 2022, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center, St. James. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye and will continue on Friday from 9:30 until 10:30 am at the church. There will be a parish prayer service at 4pm at the funeral home on Thursday.
