Trial date set for Tennessee man charged in fatal wreck

A Tennessee man charged with murder stemming from a December 2019 fatal wreck is set to stand trial this summer. James Ethan Oliver, 22, of Sparta, Tenn., has pleaded not guilty to charges of Murder, three counts of first-degree Assault, first-degree Wanton Endangerment and first-degree Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance.

Murray State won its ninth straight game and swept the season series with Tennessee Tech in Cookeville last night winning 80-75. The Racers got a pair of double-doubles from KJ Williams and Justice Hill. Rock Island resident and Warren County native John Herschel Vaughn, 59, was born Sept. 21, 1962 and died Jan. 20 at his residence in Rock Island following a sudden illness. United Stated Navy veteran of the Gulf War, he was the son of the late James Estel and Ola Mae Jones Vaughn. He was married to Elaine Vaughn, who preceded him in death. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters Ola Ann Vaughn, Norma Louise Hill, Joyce Mae Allen, Branda Kay Fann, and Betty Jean Vaughn.

The family has chosen a direct cremation. A Memorial Service will be 1 PM Friday, February 4, 2022 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gene Williams officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, February 4th, 12 Noon until the time of the Memorial Service at 1 PM. The funeral home lounge is closed at this time and no food or drinks are allowed in the funeral home. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Florian W. Kupczyk, 79

Florian W. Kupczyk, 79, of Rock Island, passed away on Jan. 22 at the Webb House Retirement Center in McMinnville. Born Oct. 28, 1942 in Chicago, IL, he was the oldest child of the late Florian Sr. and Adeline Wisniewski Kupczyk. He had a long career in cost accounting and materials management with Teletype (later AT& T) Corporation, working at manufacturing plants in Skokie, IL, Little Rock, AR, Shreveport, LA, and Columbus, OH. He moved to Rock Island in 1999 and spent his retirement years fulfilling a lifelong dream of raising beef cattle.

Two injured in Saturday Crash

Three people were involved in a Saturday afternoon crash at 500 North Congress Boulevard, Smithville. Two of them were injured. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 29 year old Brittaney L. Williams of Smithville was traveling north on Highway 56 in a 2011 Chevy Cruze when she apparently crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2002 Dodge 2500 driven by 25 year old Garrett McReynolds of Woodbury. 25 year old McKenzie Poteete of Liberty was a passenger with McReynolds.
