MITCHELL, S.D.(KMIT)- A Mitchell man who did not comply with a mask mandate at a Mitchell School Board meeting in September 2020 and refused to leave when asked to do so was found guilty of entering or refusing to leave a property after notice. 41-year old Reed Bender was ordered to pay a $400 fine and court costs of $78.50. Bender had gone through a three-day jury trial last year, which ended up in a hung jury. Davison County State’s Attorney Jim Miskimins was not seeking jail time for Bender in the second trial. His request for a second jury trial was denied, and his case was heard before Judge Kasey Sorenson.

MITCHELL, SD (GC.com) – Class B Tourney in Mitchell. A 5-run 6th inning put the Raptors on top 7-2, and they held on from there in an 8-6 win over Salem. D/E gave back four of those runs in the next inning, but they never let the Cubs score again & added an insurance run in the B8. The Raptors held a narrow 9-8 lead in hits, but had twice the errors (4-2). All five runs came w/ two-down for D/E in the 6th, courtesy of a double, three singles, and a walk. Phil Johnson threw 7inn for the win, allowing 6R (3ER) on 8H w/ 6K & 1BB before Jason Schmidt recorded the 2inn save w/ 4K. Johnson helped his own cause by going 3/4 w/ a double & 3RBI, and Schmidt wasn’t too shabby w/ a 1/2 day at the dish w/ a run & 2RBI. The Mitchell School Board received an update on the new high school at yesterday’s meeting, which was held at the MCTEA building. Architect Robin Miller of Omaha-based Schemmer initially presented plans for the new school in June. The price tag was about $20 million more than the school district had budgeted. Yesterday, Miller presented base bid plans which would come in just under the $42 million budget. However, that would mean portions of the school, including a new main gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, locker rooms, cheer and dance space, a tornado shelter, and other support spaces, would not be built until more funds could be secured. Students would use the gymnasium and other athletic facilities at the current high school. Mitchell Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Graves says the hope is that the rest of the school could be completed within five years. The project will be priced over the next few months with a possible groundbreaking taking place in the spring. Miller says the new high school could be completed by the fall of 2024.

A disaster exercise will be conducted in Mitchell on Thursday, and the public may notice emergency response vehicles at health care facilities as part of the event. The drill will begin at approximately 10 a.m. and will involve Avera Queen of Peace; Avera Brady Health and Rehab; Firesteel Healthcare Community; the Davison County Office of Emergency Management; Mitchell Fire & EMS; and the Mitchell Police Department. In order to enhance the effectiveness of the drill, emergency responders and health care personnel will collaborate with actors to create the scenario. Although measures will be taken to make clear that a drill is being conducted, casual observers may mistake this for an actual emergency. We encourage members of the public to share this announcement with family and friends to make them aware of the planned exercise.

Gary Mebius, 75, of Mitchell, SD, died Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Please join us in celebrating the life of Gary Mebius on Friday, August 12th. The gathering will take place outside at Mebius Nursery, 1700 North Foster. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM with a service at 6 PM. A dinner will follow.
