Elmira Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter

ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) - An Elmira man plead guilty to manslaughter stemming from a car accident back in 2022. Jonathan Roberts, 32, of Elmira, pled guilty to Manslaughter in the Tompkins County court on Friday. According to the Tompkins County District Attorney's office, the other charges include Reckless Driving, Criminally Negligent Homicide and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Incident Without Reporting.

Tioga County Sheriff’s Report

Jarred Tucker, age 21 of Apalachin, N.Y., was arrested on Jan. 16, 2023, at 6:35 p.m., for Criminal Contempt 2nd. This charge resulted from an investigation regarding a disturbance. Tucker was arraigned before Justice Hogan of CAP Court and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail on $2,500 bail or $10,000 bond. Tucker was scheduled to appear in the Town of Owego Court in front of Justice Hogan on Jan. 17, 2023.

Vietnam Veterans Reflect on 50th Anniversary of Paris Peace Accords

ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- Fifty years ago on January 27th, 1973, the United States signed the Paris Peace Accords, which effectively ended the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. The peace treaty was signed by the United States, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of Vietnam, and the Republic of South Vietnam. The negotiations were years in the making, starting in 1968 before they were signed in 1973 at the International Conference Center in Paris, France.

Health officials in Ithaca share common animal behaviors this time of year

ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – With recent reports of rabid animals in the area, Tompkins County Whole Health wants to inform residents of what to look for. They say raccoons, foxes, and skunks are active in the day this time of year, seeking mates or looking for food, and the behavior alone is not indicative of rabies. Signs of an infected animal include difficulty walking or moving, appearing severely aggressive or unusually tame, and attacking or biting at the air or inanimate objects. Officials say infected animals can shed the virus for several days before appearing sick.

Security upgrades in progress for Tioga County Government Buildings

Martha Sauerbrey, chair of the Tioga County Legislature, recently reported that security upgrades are underway at the Ronald E. Dougherty County Office Building. Over the past year the County Office building has been systematically improving security by installing cameras on the inside and outside of the building. They now have enhanced parking lot coverage to mitigate unwanted activity and access control to the building, both during business and after hours.

Ithaca man sentenced to 26 years in U.S. District Court

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WHCU) – An Ithaca man is sentenced in United States District Court. 32-year-old Remanu Phillips will serve 26 years and 8 months in federal prison for sexually exploiting a child. As part of his guilty plea, he admitted to producing two videos of himself sexually abusing a child on two separate days in June of 2019. Phillips further admitted to transferring the videos from his phone to a desktop computer, where they were recovered by law enforcement. Phillips will also serve a 30-year term of supervised release when he gets out of prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.

Cinemapolis launches ‘Masked Tuesdays,’ ‘Captioned Wednesdays’

ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A movie theater in Ithaca takes steps to make certain moviegoers more comfortable. Cinemapolis will have two weekly initiatives going forward, “Masked Tuesdays” and “Captioned Wednesdays.” Every Tuesday, all staff and moviegoers will wear masks for people who feel safest in a masked environment. “Captioned Wednesdays” is useful for people that are hearing impaired or developing fluency in English.

Upstate New York Theaters Ask State for Funding

Struggling to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, theaters in Upstate New York are banding together to request funding from the state. According to a report by Susan Arbetter and Marisa Jacques of Spectrum News 1, thirteen theaters in Upstate New York, including State Theatre of Ithaca, Stanley Theatre of Utica and Syracuse Area Landmark Theatre, banded together to form the Upstate Theater Coalition. They've since rebranded as "Alive! Downtowns!"
