Construction Underway on New Dorm at Arnolds Park Amusement Park

(Arnolds Park)--International and seasonal workers at Arnolds Park Amusement Park will have a new place to call home. A new dorm is being built at the corner of Zephyr Drive and Okoboji Grove Road, across the street from the park. Officials say the proximity of the dormitory will alleviate most transportation issues for workers. The dorm will house 115 workers.

Northwest Iowa school district votes to arm staff

The Spirit Lake Community School District voted on Monday to allow 10 non-teaching staff members to carry a handgun on campus. The staff, chosen by Superintendent David Smith, will undergo extensive training by local law enforcement in order to carry – including marksmanship, tactical training and weapon retention. The district hopes the new emergency protocol will better protect students in the case of an active shooter.

Area Officials Working to Find Solution For Local Homelessness

Spencer, IA (KICD)– Area officials are working to find a solution to help those considered to be homeless in Clay County and Spencer. Mayor Steve Bomgaars says this in an issue is something that will have to be handled in a more regulated manner as time goes on which is what led to a brainstorming session between elected leaders and social workers earlier this month.

The Spirit Lake Community School District voted to finalize plans to allow ten non-teaching staff members to be armed in schools. The USDA is predicting the average corn yield in Iowa that’s just a couple of bushels short of last year's record. Plus, members of the DNC meet later this week to decide the 2024 presidential nominating calendar and it might not include Iowa.

Sewer Upgrade Complete

Spirit Lake, IA (KICD) — The CEO of Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary Sewer says a multi-year, multi-faceted project to keep sewage out of West Lake Okoboji has been completed. Steve Anderson says the final phase was a difficult process of winding sewer to home owners on the South side of Center Lake.

City of Spencer Hoping To Come To Agreement on Design of “North Y” Intersection

Spencer, IA (KICD)– The City of Spencer is hoping to make some progress on a design agreement for the junction of Highways 18 and 71 north of town in coming weeks. The discussion began earlier this year when the Iowa Department of Transportation released the results of a traffic study that was requested following a number of crashes at the intersection which is when a roundabout was suggested as a possible solution.

Iowa Driver Caught Speeding Also Charged With OWI

(Undated) -- The Iowa State Patrol's reminding Thanksgiving holiday drivers to buckle up and watch their speed. The ISP also shared a photo on social media of a stop from last weekend, north of Spencer, in northwest Iowa. The driver was clocked going over 90 miles per hour. The driver's also facing an OWI charge after their blood alcohol level was about twice the legal limit.

Dickinson County Continuing to Work on Recycling Options

Dickinson County, IA (KICD)– The Dickinson County Recycling Commission is continuing to look at all of the options available to help the current program best serve all of the local communities. Supervisor Kim Wermerson says one of the biggest issues right now is dealing with an onslaught of cardboard.

Clay County Fair Wins 10 Awards at IAFE Convention

(Spencer)--The Clay County Fair and Events Center received a total of 10 awards at last week’s International Association of Fairs and Expositions 2022 Awards Show. Among them is the coveted “Best of Division Award” for the best overall agricultural program in the division. Specifically, the Clay County Fair was honored for the inaugural FFA Day that was held on September 13th at the fair.

City Approves Increased Pricing for Recycling Contract

Spencer, IA (KICD)– The City of Spencer has approved an increase in price requested by recycling contractor, Van’s Sanitation out of Le Mars. Public Works Director Mark White says while the numbers have essentially doubled since the last contract was set, continuing the recycling option in town gives residents and businesses another option than just throwing everything away.
