Arrests total 3 in Brownsville slaying; Police say women took ATM money

Brownsville police have released more information pertaining to the Aug. 13 killing of Jose Villarreal Jr., 39. Villarreal is believed to have been lured to a location by two women he met on social media, then was kidnapped at gunpoint, forced to withdraw money from a bank account and later shot and killed, investigator Martin Sandoval, spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department said on Thursday.

SPI Food Truck Festival returns as food trucks trend in the RGV

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The South Padre Island Food Truck Festival returns for a second year after it was put on hold in 2020 because of the pandemic. The CEO of JAG Downtown Festival and Events, John Garcia, said this is the second year he has collaborated with the South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau to coordinate the festival.

Good Karma: Book, coffee shop injects some culture

Books are back on South Padre Island. Since Paragraphs Books closed its doors early last year there’s been no place on the Island to buy the things until a few days ago, when business partners Will Everett and Roin Khurami flipped the switch on Karma Coffee and Books at 2500 Padre Blvd. The same entrepreneurs are behind Cafe Karma, or “Karma One” as Everett calls it, which opened on the Island’s north side in the summer of 2017.
