Simple sandwich partners with a hearty red wine

Tom Mackey Cellars, 2016 Dog Tired Red, Sonoma County Red Table Wine ($30) is a big boy, and a good boy, pun intended. If it were actually a dog, it would be a black lab, eager for your attention. It’s a feisty wine, with an exuberant wallop of huge flavors, including blackberries, black cherries, black plums, black peppercorns and the dried brambles we find along creeks and stream beds during a long drought.

Mountain Lion in Rohnert Park Has Neurological Disorder

The mountain lion that caused two Rohnert Park schools to go into lockdown yesterday has a neurological disorder. Quinton Martins, a biologist with Audubon Canyon Ranch’s Living With Lions project, tells the Press Democrat that they’ve know about the cat called P26 or Wobbly since she was three months old. He says that she has a neurological disorder since she was a kitten that causes her to walk slower than other mountain lions and with a tilt. Martins shot the lioness with a tranquilizer and the animal was taken to the Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue in Petaluma. The lockdowns at Evergreen Elementary School and Lawrence Jones Middle School were lifted shortly afterwards. Staff at the rescue center will now evaluate Wobbly for potential health problems.

Wine of the week: Tom Mackey Cellars, 2016 Dog Tired Red, Sonoma County Red Table Wine

For Tom Mackey, 2020 was a year to forget. “For the first time in 43 years, I didn’t harvest any fruit and I didn’t produce any wine,” the vintner of namesake Tom Mackey Cellars said. “As all of my growers are in Sonoma Valley, they were hurt much more than me but are rebounding. ... I actually didn’t dislike the time off, but I’m glad to be back at it again.”

Walnuts are in season now, ready for chicken and dessert dishes

We call them English walnuts. The English call them Persian walnuts. I wonder what the Persians call them. Whatever they’re called, these thin-shelled walnuts are in season right now and through the holidays. They give almonds a run for their money as the most indispensable nut in the pantry. Crushed, they’re part of crusty coatings, spooned over ice cream, used as flocking on iced cakes and essential in salads. They can be companions to meats, fish and vegetables.
