Truck Rollover Causes Turnpike Closure

An accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Monday morning caused a portion of the road to be closed. Around 9:15 Monday morning, a tractor trailer rolled over between mile markers 128-129. According to Somerset County Dispatch, the tractor trailer was hauling paper and rolled over from the Westbound lanes into the Eastbound lanes. Dispatch also tells us the driver of the truck was injured, but able to get of the cab and walk around.

Memorial Day weekend travelers beware: Traffic surges past pre-pandemic levels

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is warning people traveling over Memorial Day weekend to be alert for increased traffic and safety patrols on the turnpike. The Commission expects a 15% increase in vehicles on the road from 2021 and a 3% overall increase compared to traffic levels at the beginning of the pandemic. Friday and Saturday are expected to be the most heavily traveled days of the weekend, bringing in an expected 770,000 and 540,000 motorists respectively.

WQZS: Wahl Answers FCC Interrogatives

The embattled owner of a Somerset County radio station has filed answers to two sets of interrogatories put forth to him by the FCC regarding his future as a licensee. Roger Wahl, who founded Meyersale-licensed classic hits station WQZS, provided mostly short answers to the 140 questions ranging from the criminal charges filed against him in 2019 to the mystery surrounding the station’s ownership.

A Kawasaki driver was pronounced dead after reportedly crashing head-on into a tree in Benezette Township over the weekend. The driver, identified as 65-year-old Douglas Stethem from Indiana, Pa. was found dead at the scene when first responders arrived. Stethem reportedly lost control of his Kawasaki while trying to drive through a right-hand curve. There’s no word on how fast he might have been traveling at the time.

Suspended Somerset County DA pleads not guilty in assault case

SOMERSET, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - The suspended Somerset County district attorney pleaded not guilty to charges of harassment, reckless driving and traffic violations in an assault case. Jeffrey Thomas was jailed at the end of April after state police alleged that he was seen on a video call punching a woman as the two rode in a vehicle in May 2021. He was already facing sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, unlawful restraint and strangulation charges in an alleged attack on a woman in her Windber home in September.  A judge put him on house arrest and ordered him to wear an ankle monitor while he awaits trial in the separate cases.Thomas was elected in 2019 but was suspended after charges in the sexual assault case were filed, and his pay was halted several months ago.He's due in court next month.
