May 24, 2022 - Panola College is proud to announce the Academic Excellence Award recipients for the 2021-2022 academic year. The Academic Excellence Awards were created by Charles Moore, a math professor at Panola College for many years. Moore’s goal was to acknowledge students who excelled academically and recognize them with an award for their accomplishments.

©By Larry Hume (VFW Post 8904) May 23, 2022 - Irvin Hunter was born September 1897 in Center, Shelby County, Texas. Center is located in far East Texas and serves as the county seat of Shelby. His parents Mary Tommie Larkin of Alabama and Frank Edward Hunter of Maryland were married October 26, 1881 in Grayson County, Texas by Reverend D. Jones. Irvin had five older siblings, Clarence, Mable, Irene, Susie and Pearl. Following him in birth were brothers Bryan and Ercelle. His parents operated a boarding house in Center where they no doubt all resided and each of the children would have had assigned chores. Mother Mary sadly passed in 1911 at the age of 41 when Irvin was only 14 and was buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Center. Two years later sister Irene married Edward Slade and moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Irvin also moved there possibly living with his sister.(1)(2)

May 19, 2022 - State Highway 7 East at Flat Fork Creek was the scene of a single-vehicle crash Monday, May 16, 2022. Emergency personnel was dispatched to the scene of the incident. When the Texas Department of Public Safety and Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene a vehicle was sitting partially in the eastbound traffic lane.

May 23, 2022 - Sunday was the 6th Sunday of Easter. As promised by all the local channels, our part of the world got a nice rain last night. We had almost 2 inches in downtown Joaquin. Sunday morning also saw some cooler temperatures. All the plants in my little gardens and containers appreciate rain, and I appreciate not having to water. It is usually much later in the summer when I have to start watering every day.

May 20, 2022 - Shelby County will have an online survey from May 19th to June 2st, in order to gather information for their Hazard Mitigation Plan. Shelby County and the participating jurisdictions encourage residents to take the survey online. The survey’s goal is to record public input for the plan draft. Discussion will include identifying natural hazards and hazard-related challenges facing the County in order to begin developing a plan to preserve strengths, resolve weaknesses, and meet future mitigation goals.

May 21, 2022 - The Shelby County Museum needs your help! The next exhibit at the museum will feature the history of Shelby County via photos or paintings. We need you to share your photos of buildings, old homes/homeplaces, or people from Shelby County. The loan of your original photographs would be greatly appreciated but we do have the ability to make copies of your family photos. We need the photographs by the 10th of June.

May 17, 2022 - Panola College is proud to announce Mike Nesbitt as the head coach of the men’s basketball team beginning in Fall 2022. Nesbitt, who has multiple years of experience at both the NCAA Division I and junior college levels, served as the assistant coach at Panola College during the 2018-2019 season and returns following two seasons at Bradley University.

May 16, 2022 - State Highway 7 West was the scene of a single-vehicle crash Sunday, May 15, 2022, just under nine miles from Center. West Shelby County Volunteer Fire Department fire personnel responded to the scene to come to the aid of those involved and help clear the roadway.

SHELBY COUNTY, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – Authorities in East Texas are trying to find a man and woman wanted on warrants for a felony sex crime. According to a post on the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, 58-year-old Jimmy Moore and 46-year-old Wanda Moore of Huxley are wanted on warrants for prohibited sexual conduct, a felony.
