Man charged with murder after deadly Frayser shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An arrest has been made in a deadly shooting from over the weekend. Police say Dequinton Smith shot and killed a man Saturday night in Frayser. Detectives were called out to the 300 block of Ladue Street, where they found a man shot and killed inside a car.

Woman hurt in Hickory Hill shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman is in critical condition and a man detained after a shooting Wednesday morning in Hickory Hill. Police say they responded at 11 a.m. to the 4100 block of Meadow Park Cove, where they found the victim. She was taken to Regional One. Police are investigating but provided no further information.

Shelby County Health Department sees covid cases rise ahead of summer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -Shelby County health officials are announcing once again Covid-19 cases are on the rise, reporting nearly 300 new cases a day. Just a little over a month ago after the Shelby County Health Department reported zero new Covid-19 cases within a 24-hour window the department is now dealing with a seven-day rolling average of 290 cases.

County Commissioner Edmund Ford, Jr. Calls For Lower Property Tax Rate

In a recent Commission meeting, Shelby County Commissioner Edmund Ford, Jr. called for the county property tax rate to be rounded down. The current proposed rate of $3.399 presents an issue because the rate can only be accepted out to two places to the right of the decimal point. Ford told “Wake Up Memphis” that moving the rate to an even $3.40 is a property tax increase.

Sherra Wright denied parole in Lorenzen Wright’s murder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The woman sentenced for her involvement in the murder of NBA star Lorenzen Wright will remain in jail after a parole board denied her request. After serving less than five years of her 30-year sentence Lorenzen’s ex-wife Sherra Wright made a bid for her freedom on May 11 to a parole board.
