Jordan Harris makes a move to play basketball in Poland

This season Seminole County and the University of Georgia’s basketball standout Jordan Harris will be taking his talents to Poland to join Asseco Arka, a Polish professional basketball team, based in Gdynia. Historically the team is one of the most successful in Poland, mainly because of the nine championships in a row the team won from 2004 to 2012.

Seminole State Park receives Natural Resources Enhancement Award

Seminole State Park was awarded the Georgia Department of Natural Resources State Park and Historic Sites’ Natural Resources Enhancement Award at this year’s State Park and Historic Sites Managers Conference held in north Georgia. Park and Site managers from across the state attended the awards ceremony celebrating those who make more than 60 State Parks and Historic Sites outstanding destinations across Georgia. They also attended training sessions and shared ideas on park operations. Below are this year’s award winners.

Indians host Shaw in preseason scrimmage Friday

Sophomore Devin Gale wins 2022 Iron Indian competition. Are you ready for some football? The Seminole County gridiron. Indians, under the leadership of head coach Cedric Stegall, will host the Shaw High School Raiders out of Columbus in a preseason scrimmage game Friday night, August 12 at Seminole Stadium in Donalsonville. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Family Connection’s School Supply Scramble provides 400 bookbags to SCES students

Last week, while students at Seminole County Elementary School were prepping to head back into a new school year, the Seminole County Family Connection Collaborate was busy filling 400 backpacks with school supplies. Packed by Seminole County 4-H students and some rising sixth graders, the book bags were distributed to Seminole County Elementary students during the school’s three-day open house events.

4-H’ers attend Crop Scouting and Agricultural Education Event. 4-Hers from Seminole, Mitchell, Decatur and Grady Counties in Georgia along with 4-H’ers from Jackson County, Florida and students from Houston County, Alabama and South Carolina Governor’s School for Agriculture at John De La Howe attended the fifth annual Southeastern 4-H Crop Scouting school held on July 26-28.

Seminole County Schools open Thursday, August 4th

The first day of school for Seminole County students is Thursday, August 4. Elementary and middle/high school principals and their staffs are ready to get the 2022-23 school year underway for the approximately 1,345 students enrolled. This number includes an estimated 627 students enrolled at Seminole County Elementary and 718 enrolled at Seminole County Middle/High School.

SCES readies for first day of school on August 4

Seminole County Elementary School, along with Seminole County Middle High School will welcome students back to school on Thursday, August 4. The SCES school day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the daily morning school bell and dismiss each day at 3:12 p.m. Kindergarten through second grade students will continue to be dropped off at the main office and third through fifth grade students will continue to be dropped off in front of the gym. No students will be allowed to be dropped off at any location before 7:30 a.m..

Senator Tyler Harper speaks to award-winning FFA chapter

On Monday, June 27, members of the Seminole County Young Farmer chapter as well as some others from surrounding counties met at the Seminole County Agricultural Center to hear guest speaker Senator Tyler Harper talk about current issues facing our agricultural industry and the importance of agriculture to our state and nation’s economy. A ribeye steak meal was served to the large crowd on hand who were allowed to ask questions of Senator Harper after his presentation. Immediately following the presentation was the awards and recognition ceremony conducted by chapter President Jeff Braswell.

Windell Cross and Paul Hornsby honored with Community Hero awards

On Thursday, July 7, at a reception held at the newspaper office, the Donalsonville News presented Seminole County citizens Windell Cross and Paul Hornsby with a Community Hero Award. The awards were presented to Cross and Hornsby in grateful appreciation for their acts of selflessness, compassion, bravery and sincere concern for others in their efforts to save the life and rescue Ashley Pace-Glass (Ashli) from a near-fatal car accident on June 3, 2022.
