Phoenix roads rank worst in a study of 20 major U.S. cities

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Pittsburgh-based tech startup RoadBotics today released a new study, which used artificial intelligence (AI) to assess roadway conditions in 20 of the nation’s major metropolitan areas. As millions of Americans are preparing to return to offices and downtown business districts since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the study ranked the cities where commuters may encounter fewer problems and where headaches may be the worst. TCC to donate 140,000 backpacks full of school supplies

Verizon authorized retailer Round Room LLC is giving away 140,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children across the United States through its TCC and Wireless Zone. The School Rocks Backpack Giveaway has been held since 2013. Since then, TCC has donated 1.2 million backpacks filled with supplies to students nationwide to ensure children are well prepared for the start of the school year. TCC will also award three students each $10,000 college scholarships.

Tucson woman charged with human smuggling leading to death

PHOENIX — A woman from Tucson was indicted on Tuesday for transporting undocumented residents, ultimately resulting in a death from a car accident, authorities announced. Officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Route 86 on June 3, and discovered Michelle Sunshine Betters, 44, had been driving two non-citizens when she sideswiped a truck, injuring and killing one of the passengers in her car, according to a press release.

Flash flood sweeps through town east of Phoenix

PHOENIX – A river of rushing water, mud and debris swamped an area east of metro Phoenix on Thursday, shutting down a major highway for hours and leaving behind a mess. Heavy rain dropped 2-4 inches in the Miami-Globe area late in the afternoon, triggering a flash flood that swamped streets and caused a rock slide on U.S. 60. The road closure stretched west to Superior.
