Joseph Benjamin Friedges, 72, of Lakeville, has been charged in Scott County with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, with one for operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. According to the criminal complaint, Friedges claims his sneeze caused him to veer into a nearby ditch, hitting a teen cyclist.

(Cedar Lake Township, MN) -- A driver tells police he sneezed Friday night, causing him to run off the road and hit a 15-year-old boy on a bicycle. Deputies with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed that the teenager had died. That’s when 72-year-old Joseph Friedges approached a deputy and said he was the one who had hit the victim. He said he didn’t realize he had hit anyone until he looked back and saw the boy’s body. Friedges is charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the Friday crash. His first court appearance is scheduled for July 18th.

The motorist who struck him is now charged with criminal vehicular homicide. He contends a sneeze made him lose control of his vehicle, but prosecutors are not buying it.

A juvenile riding a bike died July 1 in Cedar Lake Township after being struck by a vehicle. At 7:14 p.m. the Scott County Sheriff’s Office received the report of the crash, near Zachary Avenue and 260th Street East.
