With your library card you can borrow a California State Libraries Park Pass! Place a hold with your library card through the catalog or drop by any San Mateo Public Library and ask the Accounts Desk if there is a Quick Pick pass available to borrow. The pass entitles you to a free vehicle day-use entry for one passenger vehicle with capacity of nine people or less or one highway licensed motorcycle at over 200 participating state parks. Checkout is for 3 weeks with no renewals. The California State Library Parks Pass is a partnership between California State Parks and the California State Library.

We have joined other Peninsula Library System partners and other libraries across the United States in becoming fine-free. Effective June 16, 2022, we will no longer be charging overdue fees for items that belong to the San Mateo Public Library. This does not include lost or damaged items, or the late return of items in the Technology Lending collection. We still ask you to adhere to due dates to ensure that items are accessible to other members of the community. Existing fines on accounts will be waived. This policy, approved by the San Mateo City Council, is an effort to provide more equitable access to library materials, services, and resources to all members of the community by removing the social inequity that fines can cause.

We've expanded electric vehicle charging in Downtown San Mateo! We’ve installed 13 new electric vehicle level 2 chargers in the basement level of the Main Street Parking Garage. Interested in housing issues here in San Mateo? Join a virtual community workshop to learn about Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) - a new state law that requires cities to ministerally approve up to two main housing units (i.e. duplexes) and certain subdivisions (i.e. urban lot splits) in single-family zoned areas. You can also share your feedback on how the city should implement this new state law.

All submissions for the library card design contest entries will be on display in the lobby of the Main Library until June 13, 2022. A panel of judges will select two winners (first place and runner-up) in each of the following categories: Children (up to age 12), Teens (13-17), and Adults (18+). Winners will be notified by May 26, 2022. An award reception will be held at the San Mateo Main Library in the Oak Room on June 9, 2022 at 6:00 PM to honor the winners and all the participants.
