Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Utility officials in North Carolina said a snake was responsible for a substation fire that left an entire town and the surrounding area without power. Duke Energy said more than 1,400 customers in Denton and the surrounding area were without electricity Wednesday morning after a snake came into contact with equipment at a substation, sparking a fire.

2 people die after separate single-car collisions in Davidson County

Two people died over the weekend in two single-car collisions in Davidson County. The first occurred at 8:24 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. Keith Ray Stamper, of Winston-Salem, was driving south on N.C. 150. The vehicle ran off the road to the right, hit a culvert and mailboxes and overturned, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

One person was injured in a shooting Monday night when multiple people broke into her home, police said. Main Street repaving scheduled to start Monday evening
