Gun collection auction brings hundreds to Saline County

SALINE COUNTY -- Hundreds of people gathered in Harrisburg Saturday morning hoping to buy a piece of one of the finest firearms collections in southern Illinois. The auction of the late Ray Wallace's gun collection brought people from across the state and across state lines. Wallace, of rural Harrisburg, was a longtime gun dealer known throughout the region. Wallace passed away on Oct. 6, 2019.

2020 Parolees Recap: Who was paroled in Saline County?

There were 52 offenders released on parole during 2020 that live in Saline County, according to Illinois Department of Corrections data obtained by SE Illinois News. The data shows 38 men and 14 women were released in Saline County. The median age of the parolees was 36. The youngest parolee was a 22-year-old man convicted of a property crime in 2020, and the oldest was a 62-year-old man convicted of a crime involving drugs in 2012.

Week ending June 19: 1 inmate sentenced in Saline County to be released

There was one inmate sentenced to jail in Saline County that will be released from the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections during the week ending June 19. According to The Institute for Illinois’ Fiscal Sustainability, Illinois spends about $37,000 a year per incarcerated person. In a study by Prison Policy Initiative, Illinois’ incarceration rate was at 564 per 100,000, higher than every industrialized country, except the United States. When compared with its surrounding states, Illinois was the lowest. Kentucky and Missouri have rates over 850 per 100,000.
