Salem’s Peterson is winner in Viking Invitational race

Both the Salem and Glenvar cross country teams will be participating in the 18th Annual Knights Crossing Invitational at Green Hill Park in west Roanoke County this Saturday. The event, which is ranked as the third best in the state by the popular runners’ website “MileStat,” will include runners from 94 high schools, 61 middle schools and eight elementary school. The race will include schools from Virginia, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Banged up Highlanders at Cave Spring Friday

The Glenvar football team is hoping to pick up its first win Friday night when the Highlanders visit Bogle Field in south Roanoke County to play Cave Spring. The Highlanders lost to Martinsville last Friday, 21-14, to drop to 0-2 and the Highlanders haven’t started 0-3 since the 2003 season in Lee Johnson’s second year as coach.

Friday is Fan Appreciation Day as Red Sox wrap up the season

The Salem Red Sox will wrap up the 2022 Carolina League season with a seven game homestand against Fredricksburg. The visiting Nationals will be trying to wrap up a spot in the Carolina League playoffs when they take on the Sox this week. Fredricksburg comes in with a five and a half game lead over the Carolina Mudcats in the CL North Division with a week to play in the regular season. Fredricksburg is a Washington farm team and the Mudcats are in the Milwaukee system.

From 1886 to 1944, Salem’s social hub was Dillard’s Drug Store. Dillard’s soda fountain was the most popular in town, where social and business gatherings happened daily. College students and local residents loved the store, and many business deals and budding romances began there. Though no longer standing, it was a Salem landmark for multiple generations.

Olde Salem Days to return Saturday

Olde Salem Days is set to return Saturday, Sept. 10. from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in downtown Salem. “It has always been a big event and a pretty big deal,” Jane Johnson, president of the Rotary Club of Salem, said. An estimated 25,000-30,000 people attend the event each year.

Salem and Glenvar will meet on Hanging Rock links today

The Salem and Glenvar golfers will go head-to-head today when they tee it up at the Hanging Rock Golf Course at 2 pm. Staunton River will also play in the three team match. Salem is coming off a solid round of 300 on Monday in a River Ridge District match hosted by Pulaski County at the Thorn Springs course. That’s a very good score but it was still 23 strokes behind leader Blacksburg, who shot 11 under par as a team with a score of 277. Jake Albert of the Bruins was medalist with 65.

Salem, Glenvar cross country teams have meets this week

The Salem cross country team opened the 2022 season with a meet at Blacksburg last Saturday. The Salem varsity ran in an open 5K race that was not team oriented. Three Salem girls ran the 5K race and were led by Ryan Long. Callie Conner followed and Elizabeth Bocock was our Salem’s third finisher. Ashley Toapanta ran in a middle school 3K.

Salem Sports Foundation is looking for new members

The Salem Sport Foundation is kicking off another school and athletic year at Salem High School and looking for new members to join and old members to renew. Recent support includes funding for team awards for multiple teams and Hud’l memberships for multiple teams. Information on the Salem Sports Foundation can be found on Facebook.

Sandlot Football season opens

The Sandlot Football season opened last Saturday with three games at Spartan Field. The two Salem 8-and-under teams played each other, and here Jace Johnson (#10) finds a nice hole to pick up some yardage. The Flag Football and girls youth soccer season opened with games on Tuesday of this week.

Maroon soccer women ranked 6th

The Roanoke College women’s soccer team has been picked sixth with 110 points in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason coaches’ poll. RC opens the season with a pair of road contest at Greensboro on September 1 and Johns Hopkins on Sept. 4. The Maroons have their home opener against Albion on Sept. 10 as part of the 2022 Roanoke Invitational Showcase. RC will take on Sewanee the next day on Sept. 11. Lynchburg will be the fourth team and will play a pair of neutral site games against Albion and Sewanee at the event.

Glenvar Middle School will host Lewis 7th graders in football tonite, AL 8th grade home to Read Mtn.

The Glenvar Middle School football team will play host to the Andrew Lewis Middle School 7th grade team tonight at Highlander Stadium. Game time is 6:30 pm for the border war. Last week Glenvar defeated Clifton Middle, 32-0 as Brody Williams scored three touchdowns and Ranger Swanson had two. The Lewis 7th graders lost to Pulaski Middle, 40-6, on Thursday but bounced back with a 24-14 win over the Read Mountain 7th graders on Monday.

Middle School volleyball teams have Thursday matches

The Glenvar Middle School volleyball team won two matches last week while Andrew Lewis dropped two. Glenvar beat Central Academy in two sets, 25-9 and 25-15, then beat Blacksburg on Monday, 25-18 and 25-14. The Highlanders were scheduled to host Ben Franklin on Wednesday and Cave Spring is at Glenvar tonight.
