215 of 254 Texas counties are in a burn ban

SAN ANGELO, Texas – As of July 25th, 85% of the Lone Star State is under a burn ban status, with 22,984,560 of the population impacted by drought conditions. According to Texas A & M Forest Services, 215 of the 254 counties in Texas are under a burn ban. Tom Green, Coke, Irion, Schleicher, Menard, Concho, Runnels, Reagan, Sutton, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch, and Coleman county are all under the burn ban. However, Sterling County is the only Concho Valley County that is not marked on the outdoor burn ban map provided by the Texas A & M outdoor burn ban map.

Jimmie Jessie Bates, 94

Jimmie Jessie Bates, 94 years, went home to his Lord on Saturday July 16, 2022. Jimmie was born at home in Runnels County. His parents were the late JC and Davette (Wilson) Bates. Life was hard in west Texas during those times. You learned to work and depend on family. Jim left school in the sixth grade in order to help the family make a living. Jim was drafted into the United States Army in December 1952 and released from active duty December 1954. Jim returned to Coleman and worked in the demolition business and helped out the family. He later married Frances Ann Crenshaw on July 4, 1955 in Coleman, Texas. Frances has preceded him in death. Jim will be remember as a loving father, grandfather, uncle, friend and a hard working man.

Yellow House Therapy opens in Winters

WINTERS – Tessa Knickerbocker and Jessica Jacob are former educators in Runnels County who recently opened a counseling business. Tessa was a teacher for 12 years and a counselor for 6 years at Ballinger High School. Jacob was a teacher for 12 years. SAN ANGELO, TX (05/26/2022)– Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, has announced the students achieving the Dean’s List designation for the 2022 spring semester. To be eligible for the ASU Dean’s List, full-time undergraduate students must maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

One person arrested after pellet-gun shooting in Winters

WINTERS – A Winters man was arrested on Saturday after allegedly shooting another man with a pellet gun. Details have not been released by the Winters Police Department but Runnels County Sheriff Carl Squyres responded to an email from the newspaper, “From what I understand 2 young men, I’m not sure their ages, got into an argument and one of them shot the other one with a pellet gun in the neck. He was taken by private vehicle to the Winters hospital who then notified law enforcement. I believe he was taken to one of the hospitals in Abilene with non-life threatening injuries. No arrests have been made at this point Winters PD is handling the investigation.”

Big Country kids win big at 4-H State Roundup

4-H’ers in Runnels, Scurry and Callahan counties brought home numerous honors from the recent 4-H State Roundup. Other counties also did well, but these three had the most awards. Teams from Runnels and Scurry counties both finished top 4 in the duds to dazzle/wearable event. It’s Sew Time in Runnels County

RUNNELS COUNTY – Runnels County 4-H’ers have been busy learning and using their newly acquired sewing skills. Over Spring Break, experienced sewers who were getting ready for District 7 4-H Fashion Show made 14 walker bags and donated them to the Ballinger Health Care and Rehab Nursing Home. This past week, 4-H’ers new to the Clothing and Textile project learned basic sewing skills and skills to use in the Duds to Dazzle part of the project. The girls learned how to take an ordinary item and turn it into something new. They turned a pizza pan into a decorative door hanger, a picture frame into a tray, and a cutlery tray into a jewelry organizer using paint, rope, flowers, ribbons, beads, scrapbook paper, and lots of hot glue.

Grab your dog and head to the Ballinger City Park for a paved and heavily shaded walk! While you’re out there, check out a brand-new shop located where the putt-putt golf was in prior years! The owner, Nannette O’Con, is assisted by her two daughters, Tara Escobedo and Priscilla O’Con and they have revamped and restored the rock building into a neat business that many are already enjoying.
