We have today the name of the Barrow County man who was killed in a vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Athens: Joseph Walling was 32 years old, from Winder. Athens-Clarke County Police say Waller was hit by a car while walking on Jefferson Road early Monday morning. Two people in the car suffered what police say were minor injuries. An Athens-Clarke County Police investigation is ongoing.

Church bells could ring in Commerce

Church bells could soon be ringing again in Commerce following action on Sept. 27 by the Commerce Planning Commission. The board gave a recommendation of approval to a decibel level variance for Commerce First Baptist Church to install a digital system that would chime bell sounds in town. Todd Chandler, the church's minister of music, said that unlike real bells, the volume of sound with a digital system could be controlled.

The two-week rolling total for positive tests for coronavirus are, for a second straight day, below 700 in Athens: that’s according to the latest report from the Georgia Department of Public Health, which says Clarke County peaked at more than 1,400 cases per two weeks earlier this summer. State health officials say 44 percent of Athens-Clarke County residents are considered fully vaccinated against coronavirus. That figure is 57 percent in Oconee County.

Westminster teen arrested for sexual exploitation of a minor

OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a teen for sexual exploitation of a minor on Sept. 24. Deputies charged Bradley Jadon Neely, 18, of Westminster, with two counts of criminal exploitation of a minor – 2nd degree and one count of harassment – 2nd degree.

Athens area COVID update: Clarke County sees 700 cases in past two weeks

Average daily cases in Athens and Georgia continue to decrease, with new Clarke County COVID-19 cases in the last two weeks around 700. Georgia saw a total of 67,003 new cases of COVID-19, including both PCR and antigen tests, in the last two weeks, according to information from the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH).
