A month ago, Erik Broekemeier was barely familiar with the Prospect League. But thanks to an opportune performance on the mound for the Troy American Legion baseball team, he's now in the middle of the Dragons Mania that's gripped Alton baseball fans. In fact, the 19-year-old graduate of Metro-East Lutheran High School is responsible for some of it. He and his bat took care of that Tuesday night at Lloyd Hopkins Field when he blasted a walk-off grand slam, lifting the upstart Dragons to an 8-7 victory over the Quincy Gems and with it, the team's first Prospect League Western Conference championship. He and his teammates are prepping for the league championship series, a best-of-three affair against Chillicothe that begins Thursday night at Hopkins Field. The booming homer sailed over the left-center field fence and into the night. It set off a wild celebration on the artificial-turf field at The Hop, one that included his new teammates, coaches and a multitude of happy River Dragons fans.
