One of the kids suffered a laceration on their knee. 12:52 p.m. — A passerby reported seeing a red car driving east near Dream Island hit a bear that ran out into the road. ROUTT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the closure of California Park effective 8 a.m. Saturday through July 15. The closure corresponds with the arrival of thousands of Rainbow Gathering attendees. The festival is being held this year in Adams Park, immediately to the north of California Park. Maybe you’ve heard, but in the event you haven’t, you should know that thousands of acres in Routt County are being damaged this week by people who mean well, but don’t understand the damage they are causing to our local lands. These people are ruining a native ecosystem, impacting water quality, degrading soil health, causing light pollution, and negatively impacting animals, both domestic and wild, due to the damage they are causing to the landscape. Fourth of July fireworks set for return to Steamboat Lake Saturday

Fireworks are expected to return to the skies above Steamboat Lake on Saturday, July 2, after extreme fire danger nixed the celebration last year. The show was canceled last year amid Stage 2 fire restrictions in Routt County that prohibited the use of any fireworks. At that time, the Muddy Slide Fire had been burning in South Routt County for almost two weeks.

Just 19% of ballots returned ahead of Tuesday’s primary election

Nearly 3,700 ballots have been returned to the Routt County Clerk and Recorder’s office as of Monday afternoon ahead of Tuesday’s primary election. It is too late to mail a ballot back for it to be counted, as postmarks have no bearing on whether a ballot is counted or not in Colorado. County Clerk and Recorder Jenny Thomas emphasized that ballots need to be received by her office by the time polls close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28.

COVID-19 vaccines now available for everyone older than 6 months

A year and a half after the first COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Routt County, the youngest members of the community have now been approved to get a shot. On June 18, the Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that children from 6 months through 5 years should receive a COVID-19 vaccine. These children can get either the Pfizer or Moderna shots, the CDC said.
