Mount Ayr Council Approves Participation In Rural Shrink Iowa Initiative

Mount Ayr’s Board of Aldermen approved their participation in the Rural Shrink Iowa Initiative during their meeting on Monday night. The Rural Shrink Iowa Initiative is a research project through Iowa State University and financed with a $1.5 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation. The initiative is intended to stabliize or improve the quality of life in Iowa towns that have lost population. There will be no cost on the part of the City of Mount Ayr to participate in the program.

A central Iowa man died over the weekend in a boating accident in southwest Iowa. The project includes replacing the existing 86’ x 26’ continuous concrete slab bridge with a single 12’ x 12’ x 124’ reinforced concrete box culvert. Construction of the project is anticipated to begin in Fall of 2022.

A driver will not face charges after damaging property at the city park in Kellerton, Iowa. The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office says Joseph Mate was driving a vehicle without permission of the owner Monday. Mate is reported to have slid around the corner of the park entrance and lost control of the vehicle, which ran into a sign and post in the Kellerton City Park. Damage is estimate to be $4,200.

Ramona Belle “Rosie” Brand was born April 11, 1930 in Rice Township, Ringgold County, IA. She passed away March 19, 2021 at the Mount Ayr Health Center at the age of 90. She was the fifth child of nine born to Merle Carlton and Gladys Emile McCarty Reynolds. She lived her whole life in Ringgold County and graduated from Mount Ayr High School with the class of 1948. Rosie was married to Clyde Edgar Brand on May 23, 1948 at the Methodist parsonage in Kellerton, IA. To this union four children were born: James Allen, David Eugene, Cynthia Ann and Gary Dean.

Texas Residents Arrested for Active Warrants in Ringgold County

According to the Sheriff’s Office, they received a report of a suspicious vehicle near the ATM at City State Bank in Mt. Ayr on Friday around 5:10 pm. The vehicle was located a short time later on Highway P-46, where a traffic stop was conducted.
