Central Oregon's amateur operators staged Ham Radio Field Day Saturday in Sisters and La Pine. People were able to learn more about the hobby from the High Desert Amateur Radio Group. Amateur or ham Radio is a means of communicating when other methods can fail in disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes and storms. Ham radios proved crucial during events such as Hurricane Katrina and 9/11.

CHILOQUIN, OR -- A Bend woman was killed in an overnight crash on Highway 97 in Klamath County. According to OSP, a pickup collided head-on with an SUV driven by 35-year-old Cybil Nelson of Bend. Both vehicles were destroyed by the resulting fire; Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.

REDMOND, OR -- The Bethlehem Inn officially opens its new Redmond homeless shelter this week. Executive Director Gwenn Wysling says work to renovate the 1960s-era Greenway Motel was partially funded through the Legislature, which approved money to help communities convert old hotels and motels into shelters for the houseless. It’s the first “Project Turnkey” property in Redmond. "And it is the first year-round shelter in Redmond," Wysling tells KBND News, "One of our wonderful partners, Shepherd’s House, has done winter shelters for, I believe, 7 or 8 years and they too are looking to bring a shelter also here to Redmond, because we have seen the need expand."

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend Fire & Rescue is placing its new Pierce ladder truck into service next week and is inviting the community to attend the celebration and ceremony. This 107-foot ladder truck will respond to calls in the City of Bend, the Rural Fire District, and surrounding communities when needed. It will be replacing the current American La France ladder truck, which has been seen service for over 19 years and has reached the end of its service life.

Some roads in downtown Bend were closed for the Deschoops basketball 3 by 3 tournament Saturday morning. The streets were lined with basketball hoops for the inaugural event. Many families came out to see and support the players. The tournament for all ages and skill levels continues Sunday, and participants can play for fun or to win cash and prizes.
