A 29-year-old man was shot dead in Linden Wednesday evening, authorities said. Officers responding to the shooting report on the 600 block of Morningside Avenue found Linden man Grady Jilus suffering from serious injury around 8:45 p.m., Union County Prosecutor William A. Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed by a police car in East Brunswick as well as the officer driving the marked patrol car. Julius Filep, 55, of Edison was walking north on Route 18 near Lake Avenue when he was hit by the vehicle at 3:35 a.m. Sunday, the state Office of the Attorney General said.

Longtime Pastor Who Stole Nearly $517,000 Gets Prison Term

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — The longtime pastor of a Catholic church who took nearly $517,000 in parish funds has been sentenced to seven years in state prison. The Rev. Douglas Haefner was sentenced Tuesday and is due to start serving his term Aug. 19. However, he has applied for the state’s Intensive Supervised Parole program, which allows prisoners to serve all or part of their sentences at home.
