STURGIS, S.D. — A Sturgis man got an unexpected visitor Wednesday morning when a semi-truck drove off Interstate 90 and crashed into his home. South Dakota Highway Patrol tells NewsCenter1 that shortly after 6 a.m., a semi-truck and trailer headed east, left the interstate, hit a chain-link fence, crossed Dickson Drive, and plowed into the man’s home.

Biker killed in multi-motorcycle crash near Scenic

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - One person died in a three-motorcycle crash Tuesday morning. The crash was on South Dakota Highway 44 near Scenic. “We have a three-motorcycle crash; we have three serious life-threatening injuries that were transported to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital and then we had one fatality,” said South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Elyse Helkenn.

Car crash: Woman with two children attempted to flee the scene

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - A woman involved in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon attempted to flee the scene with two children. Angelita Rich, 36, was identified as the suspect and arrested on several charges. A preliminary breath test administered to Rich registered at .229 (nearly three times the legal limit to drive). She was charged with driving under the influence, vehicular battery, hit and run with Injuries, reckless driving, driving under suspension, no proof of insurance, and two warrants.

STURGIS, S.D. (KOTA) - Camping is king during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Visitors forgo hotel stays in favor of bringing their own tents, trailers, and RVs. That’s according to a study done by the City of Sturgis that says more than half of the people who attend the rally choose to camp. The most common reason for camping boils down to economics, since rally-goers can get much more for their money, especially at places like the Buffalo Chip where campground fees include access to the various concerts the campground hosts during the event.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Authorities are on scene at a semi vs. house crash in Sturgis. The South Dakota Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Dickson Drive early Wednesday morning. The 2020 Volvo semi-truck and tractor was travelling east on Interstate 90 when it left the roadway near mile marker 32, entering the ditch and travelling through a chain-link fence. The semi then entered private property, going through the yard and crashing into the home on the property.

Rapid City woman arrested after DUI crash Tuesday afternoon

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Police Department officers responded to a report of a crash in the area south of LaCrosse Street and Omaha Street Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived at the scene of the crash, officers learned from witnesses that a pickup truck was southbound on Lacrosse Street in front of a passenger vehicle, which was travelling at a high rate of speed. The passenger vehicle collided with the rear-end of the pickup truck and both vehicles came to a stop after the crash.

Black Hills and Badlands Tourism’s Motorcycle Maps a great resource for riders of all levels

RAPID CITY, S.D. – With hundreds of thousands of people here for the Rally, one tourism group is working to make sure riders of all levels can enjoy the scenery. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Rally back in 2015, Black Hills and Badlands decided to release a special map with roads for motorcyclists to ride in the region. Together with the Black Hills chapter of A.B.A.T.E, they were able to create a series of tear-off maps with suggested routes for riders of all skill level. To make it easy to understand, the roads are color-coded based on easiest to the most difficult: black, blue, red, orange, and yellow.

STURGIS — State figures show that Sturgis Motorcycle Rally traffic is up this year, but local law enforcement officials say their instincts tell them otherwise. Counts of vehicles entering Sturgis since its official opening Friday show an increase of about 7.5% over the previous five-year average. The tallies are compiled by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
