Denise N. Hinkins, 70, of Rainy Lake passed away April 18, 2022. She was born November 5, 1951 in Flint to James and Margaret Smith. Denise is survived by her husband, Stan; two children, Kirk (Andria) Hinkins of Commerce Township and Brian (Tonni) Hinkins of Swartz Creek; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Greg (Roxanne) Smith, Jeff (Susan) Smith and Gary (Nancy) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

Dogs accused of mauling horse remain in shelter as court case drags on

ROGERS CITY – Presque Isle County has paid $36,200 for the ongoing care of two dogs that four judges said should be euthanized. Two-and-a-half years after owners found the American bulldogs, injured and covered in blood, in a barn stall near a mauled horse, the dogs remain at the Cheboygan County Humane Society while attorneys dispute what should become of them.

Local governments receive marijuana tax funds

The State of Michigan announced its annual allocations to local governments from the adult-use marijuana tax. Local governments who allow recreational marijuana shops to operate will receive $56,453 per business. In Northeast Michigan, Presque Isle County will receive $112,906 for the two dispensaries that are in Onaway and Rogers Township. Onaway and Rogers Township will each receive $56,453.

Two advance to state individual wrestling finals

Five Presque Isle County wrestlers moved on to the individual regional tournament after placing in the top four in their weight categories at last week’s individual district tournament. Two will advance to the state individual finals after qualifying at the Charlevoix regionals. Hayden Hentkowski and Anthony Paull advanced to the state, according to Rogers City coach Chase McLennan.
