38 Years Ago: Metallica Start the Thrash Revolution With ‘Kill ‘Em All’

When Dave Mustaine was abruptly fired from Metallica and shipped off to Los Angeles on a Greyhound bus, he sputtered to James Hetfield, “Don’t use any of my shit!”. Metallica didn’t obey his request, either out of spite or from the conviction that the rest of the band contributed to the songs, as well, so they belonged to the entire group and not just to Mustaine. While they gave their former guitarist writing credit for “Jump in the Fire,” “”Phantom Lord,” “Metal Militia” and “The Four Horsemen” -- an expansion of their No Life Til Leather demo track “The Mechanix” -- they didn’t ask him if they could use them. Had they done so, Metallica’s debut Kill 'Em All, which came out on July 25, 1983, might have sounded pretty different.

There was no mistaking the Lithuanian basketball team at the 1992 Olympic Games — they could easily be spotted wearing their bright tye-die uniforms with an image of a slam-dunking skeleton across the front. The explanation for the one-of-a-kind design could be traced back to a generous New York City design artist and the reigning experts on tie-dye themselves: the Grateful Dead.

Dee Snider Says Twisted Sister Royalty Checks Are a ‘Joke’

Dee Snider said Twisted SIster didn’t receive a penny in album royalties until 1998, and that, despite selling millions of records, the payments amounted to a “joke.”. In a recent interview with The Metal Voice, the frontman recalled how their initial success period had come and gone before any money came their way, and it didn’t seem to include a share of the sales they’d generated before splitting in 1987.
