First Case Of Rabies Confirmed In Polk County In 2021

On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, PCSO Animal Control responded to Poyner Road in Polk City, in reference to a fight between a dog and a raccoon. The owner of the Tibetan terrier mix separated the two animals and dispatched the raccoon; Animal Control responded, retrieved the raccoon carcass, and sent it to the state laboratory in Tampa to be tested for rabies. The positive rabies was confirmed two days later.

22 Yr Old Lakeland Woman Killed In Multiple Vehicle Crash Early Sunday Morning

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit is investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred around 2:15 a.m. this morning, June 20, 2021, on Ellis Avenue just east of Park Street in Unincorporated Lakeland which resulted in the death of 22-year-old Teresa Hammond of Lakeland. Hammond was the passenger of a 2003 gray Ford Focus.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Teresa Hammond, 22, was killed early Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in unincorporated Lakeland, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say Hammond and Marquist Westbrooks, 23, were sitting in a Ford Focus parked in the north side lane of Ellis Avenue with its lights off around 2:15 a.m. when the passenger side of the vehicle was struck by a 2001 Buick Century, driven by Lisa Breeding, 54, at a high rate of speed.
