Local Platte County youth do well at SkillsUSA Nationals

ATLANTA, GA – The group of kids from Platte County started four years ago with only a handful of students. In four years’ time, the group has gone over 60 in number, they have done everything from remodeling a vintage Guernsey building, began work on the oldest YMCA in Wyoming and have had an adviser in Troy Reichert who was awarded the Wyoming adviser of the year in April, I was selected the Region 5 adviser of the year. Winners from all 5 regions in the United States were recognized on stage and given a plaque. The adviser from region 1 was selected national adviser of the year.

Saying farewell to local entrepreneur Kim Zimmerman

Touch of Color, owned by Kim Zimmerman was a rallying point on the day after Flag Day back in 2020 just a few weeks before the Fourth of July celebration. An unused flagpole on her property was repurposed and flags donated by the VFW were hoisted in a flag-raising celebration. As others are seeking to tear down and burn the Ameican Flag, Platte County stood to its feet and saluted the flag as it flies high above Platte County. Zimmerman has been a rock and a fixture in this town for 15 years and now, finally, she has reached that point where she is selling her business and making a move to Florida to retire.

A Casper man has broken his own state record for longnose sucker. According to a Wyoming Game and Fish Department press release, Bobo first broke the 1998 record in 2021. This year, his 10.5 inch long fish broke the 2021 record. It was 1.5 inches longer than his first record. Bobo said both fish were caught along the same stretch of the river, and both times he was actually fishing for trout using a worm. He's the first angler to break a Wyoming record this year.

Fire bans in effect in Platte County after ‘extremely dry fuel’ allows seven human-caused fires to grow rapidly

CASPER, Wyo. — The Platte County Commission declared a fire ban on Tuesday prohibiting outdoor fires and fireworks. Volunteer firefighters in Platte County have already responded to seven fires caused by humans this season, and “extremely dry fuels” allowed those fires to grow rapidly, according to the resolution passed by the commission. In addition, cheatgrass is fully mature in the county, which can contribute to a rapid rate of spread in the event of wildfires.
