Two bodies recovered from Missouri River near Pierre

PIERRE, S.D. – The bodies of two people have been recovered from the Missouri River near Pierre. Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says his department received a report about 11 p.m. Wednesday of two missing people who were last seen fishing near Farm Island. Sheriff’s deputies and Game, Fish and Parks conservation officers began a search of the area. Divers and drones from the Pierre Fire Department Rescue Squad and Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Management were also used in the search.

South Dakota man killed by cellmate in California jail

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. ( — A South Dakota man who was serving time in an Indio, California jail, has been killed by his cell mate. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, 48-year-old John Hemmer was found with significant traumatic injuries during a routine safety check at the John J. Benoit Detention Center on Wednesday morning.

Class A Junior Legion State Tournament Begins Friday

PIERRE, S.D. ( — The 2021 South Dakota American Legion Class A Junior Legion State Tournament begins today at Hyde Stadium in Pierre. The double-elimination tournament begins at 11 a.m. with Brookings facing off against Rapid City 320 followed by Rapid City Post 22 taking on Harrisburg. The night session begins at 5 p.m. and will see Aberdeen take on Sioux Falls East and the final game of the day will pit the host Pierre against Sioux Falls West.

Nearly 69% of South Dakota is in severe drought or worse

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows all of Brookings County in the “severe drought” category. Nearly 69-percent of the state is currently in severe drought or worse. Areas in south central South Dakota saw a slight improvement in conditions to move out of the extreme drought category. Gregory and Charles Mix Counties moved from extreme to severe drought.

Sioux Falls, SD, based biofuel company has opened a second plant producing all-natural, 100% plant-based purified alcohol. POET Bioprocessing in Alexandria, Indiana, began production of purified alcohol this week (July 21, 2021) after breaking ground in late 2020.
