The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office says a social media challenge might have been behind a recent case of car theft in Toccoa: three juveniles are facing charges. The National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary findings in the investigation of a plane crash in Wyoming, one that claimed the lives of a husband and wife from Hart County: Charlie and Kelli Schell operated the Cateechee Conference Center in Hartwell. The NTSB says their Cessna went down shortly after takeoff on July 14, crashing and burning in woods near Buffalo Wyoming.

Why neither Hall nor Gainesville wants apartment complex in its school district

Hall County school board members voted Monday to begin drafting a resolution opposing the de-annexation of property from Gainesville to Hall County. School board members said the property would be the site of a 342-unit apartment complex located at 2866 Lanier Tech Drive, right next to Lanier Technical College. They say they oppose the development because it would cost the school system more to educate the students who would live in those apartments than the school system would receive in added property tax revenue.

Local briefs include more dynamite blasting on Athens’ east side

The dynamite blasting that began earlier this week is scheduled to resume this afternoon on Athens’ east side, with the rock blasting that is part of a road project along Lexington Road is set for 3 o’clock. It will take place on Lexington near Gaines School Road. More blasting is scheduled for Friday and City Hall says the work could continue into next week.

Hall schools installs UV light on bus to mitigate COVID-19

A group of special education students may be able to breathe easier while riding the bus this year. Over the summer, Hall County Schools retrofitted an air filtration system on one of its special education buses. The unit is equipped with an ultraviolet C light that is meant to deactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

2 soldiers killed, 3 injured in weather-related incident in Georgia

Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Two U.S. soldiers at Georgia's Fort Benning were killed and three others were injured in what authorities described as a weather-related event. The Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence and the Fort Benning Public Affairs Office said in a statement that the unspecified incident occurred Tuesday at Yonah Mountain, located about 60 miles north of Athens, Ga.

Winder updates rates for water, sewer, and sanitation

The City of Winder has announced updated rates for the city's water, sewer, and sanitation services. These rates will go into effect September 1, 2022. According to a press release, these updated rates are the result of a detailed water and sewer rate study conducted in Spring of 2022. This study was used to predict future needs for the city’s infrastructure and other operations.

UNG schedules Starlight Celebration

ESPN attempted to name the top 50 newcomers in college football this season. In doing that, the outlet combined not just incoming high school prospects but also transfers on new teams.
