Wildfire smoke brings hazardous air quality to Wenatchee area

WENATCHEE - Air quality in the Wenatchee area has dropped to hazardous as smoke from several North Cascades fires has blanketed the area. The state Department of Ecology has issued an air quality alert for both Chelan and Douglas counties for Wednesday. The alert is in effect until further notice.

Hailey Bolyard named 2023 Methow Valley Rodeo queen

Hailey Bolyard, a freshman at Newport High School who has many Methow Valley connections, has been named 2023 Methow Valley Rodeo queen. Bolyard follows in the hoofprints of her mother, Amanda Hammer (formally Taylor), a Liberty Bell High School graduate who was the 1999 Methow Valley Rodeo queen. Her sister, Alyssa Bolyard, will be the 2023 Newport Rodeo Queen, making them automatic travel partners for events around the region.

EAST WENATCHEE — Douglas County has extended its burn ban through mid-October due to concerns over current fire weather conditions. At the request of the Douglas County Fire District 2 Fire Marshal, Douglas County commissioners approved extending the burn ban until Oct. 15. The burn ban usually ends Sept. 30.

Recycle PVC materials for animal research

Methow Recycles and Home Range Wildlife Research are teaming up for a PVC and materials drive this fall for live animal traps. Methow Recycles said in a press release that it ordinarily does not accept PVC for recycling, but for the months of October and November the organization will support Home Range Wildlife Research, a local nonprofit that is upcycling PVC in order to build live traps for lynx research.
