Thousands turn out for annual Atascadero Tamale Festival

Best overall tamale went to La Luz Del Mundo Oxnard. – Several thousand people turned out for the 6th Annual Atascadero Tamale Festival on Saturday. Organizer and Deputy City Manager Terrie Banish estimated that more than 40,000 tamales were purchased by attendees. People lined up at tamale booths to buy traditional and exotic tamales. Some people ate the tamales standing or sitting in the Sunken Gardens. Many people take the tamales home to freeze them and enjoy them at a later date.

Local non-profit One Cool Earth has built five new ‘living laboratories’ this year in SLO County. – Local non-profit One Cool Earth has seen a boom in demand for school gardens in the wake of the pandemic. Schools are in need of outdoor classrooms as a safe way to learn and spend time as a community. This year alone, One Cool Earth has built five new “living-laboratories” in San Luis Obispo County, increasing their partner schools to a total of 23 schools on the Central Coast, including the new “Outdoor Learning Garden” at Winifred Pifer Elementary in Paso Robles.

Temporary Bob Jones Trail closure displaces homeless community members

Many homeless people were ousted from their encampments on the Bob Jones Trail after the City of San Luis Obispo temporarily closed the trail starting on Monday. The popular bike trail will remain closed for eight weeks so city staff can reduce fire hazards and improve fencing along the trail, according to a news release.
