Panola County, Hand Up Network continue tornado relief efforts

Panola County is reminding residents that the Hand Up Network is working with the county to help residents with tornado damage and clean-up. “The journey to recovery for our community is a long one and there are still families that are displaced or dealing with significant damage,” County Judge LeeAnn Jones said. “Many did not have insurance or resources and our friends at Hand Up Network are trying to help fill that void. They have been working their network across the State of Texas to find people willing to help, but we also need to help them help us!”

Panola, Rusk counties receive tornado cleanup funds

Rusk and Panola counties have received funding from the East Texas Council of Governments to help with debris cleanup from spring tornadoes, the organization announced. ETCOG’s Executive Committee recently agreed to give $27,905 in excess funds from the solid waste program to Rusk and Panola coutnies to help with clearing, collection and disposal of tornado debris. The funding, to be divided between the two counties, will help reimburse clean-up costs.

College Rodeo: Panola's Womack goes for National title

Panola College’s and saddle bronc rider, Michael Womack, has punched his ticket to tonight’s finals. Womack completed his third round on Tuesday night and is sitting back watching now to see where he will be seeded in the finals. Currently he is No. 1 in average ranking and is just one of two riders in the field of 17 riders that have completed the third round, to have ridden all three of the competition horses.

Guest Column: The forgotten hazards of abandoned wells

If the oven-like feeling outside wasn’t obvious enough, summer is in full swing here in East Texas. For a variety of reasons, many of us will be doing more outside, from working hay fields to clearing brush to pure recreation. Safety is rightfully the No. 1 concern for any activity, and the more you do outdoors, the higher chance there is of coming across sometimes hidden hazards such as abandoned water wells. With more than 4,000 documented water wells in Panola County, there could be just as many unidentified or abandoned wells out there which represent a threat to people, livestock and the aquifer we all depend on.
