Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Gets ball for Game 1 of twin bill

Wheeler is scheduled to start the first game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Nationals, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Wheeler had been in line to start Wednesday before the contest was postponed due to 12 positive COVID-19 cases within Washington's organization. The Nationals will conduct more testing early Thursday, but for now, MLB is optimistic the doubleheader will be played. Wheeler has gone 2-1 with a 3.08 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 30:5 K:BB in 26.1 innings through four starts in July.

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Wednesday's game postponed

Wheeler won't start as scheduled Wednesday since the game was postponed due to the Nationals' COVID-19 outbreak, Jeff Passan of reports. Trea Turner was forced to exit Tuesday's contest during the first inning after it was discovered he tested positive for the virus, and Washington is apparently dealing with an outbreak involving multiple players and coaches. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Thursday, and Wheeler is poised to start one of those contests.

Phillies’ Zack Wheeler beats Braves again

The Braves lost to the Phillies 5-1 Friday at Citizens Bank Park. It was the third time the Braves lost to Phillies starter and Georgia native Zack Wheeler this season. 1. Max Fried lived on the edge for his entire outing. The southpaw labored through five innings. He didn’t record a clean frame, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings. Fried also walked four Phillies. Some shoddy defense behind him didn’t help, but Fried was far from his best.

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Dominant through seven innings

Wheeler (8-5) earned the win Friday against Atlanta after tossing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing seven hits and two walks while fanning eight. Wheeler had one of his finest performances of the season and continues to rack up strikeouts at a rapid pace, as he has fanned at least six in five straight starts while posting a career-best 10.9 K/9 on the season. The right-hander, who has given up zero or one run in three of his last five outings, is expected to make his next start during next week's series against the Nationals at home.

He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against Atlanta on Saturday.

Based on His Career, Zack Wheeler Is Aiming to Be a Cy Young Candidate

The New York Mets miscalculated. That alone would be enough to make the Phillies’ smile, but Zack Wheeler and his 2021 campaign have left nothing on the table. So let’s start at the beginning and see what led to Wheeler landing in Philadelphia, eventually closing out the 2021 All-Star game for the National League, and his future battle for the coveted Cy Young.

Zach Eflin, Phillies Call Out All-Star Game after Zack Wheeler Snub

Phillies pitcher Zach Eflin wasn’t happy with how Zack Wheeler was treated during the All-Star Game. Zack Wheeler has been the Philadelphia Phillies‘ ace all season long. Beyond that, he has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. If he wasn’t in the same league as Jacob deGrom, Wheeler would be in the conversation for this year’s NL Cy Young Award. He’ll likely still get votes when the time comes.

Zack Wheeler vs. payroll flexibility: Who ya got?

Last week, ESPN “expert” Buster Olney discussed players who could be on the move at the trade deadline, and said this about the Phillies:. You’d assume that some team would ask the Philadelphia Phillies if they are interested in talking about Zack Wheeler—and Philadelphia would be crazy not to explore the possibilities of what the return for Wheeler would be, with the right-hander dominating, and how the resulting payroll flexibility might work for them in 2022,” Olney wrote. “For the record: Phillies owner John Middleton declared during the winter he would not trade Wheeler for Babe Ruth.
