Initial tests didn't reveal any serious injuries, but the Red Sox will be cautious with him for now given that it's still early March. Grotz was always a long shot at best to break camp on the big-league roster given that he's merely a non-roster invitee, so any time lost to an injury only makes his chances even slimmer.

Grotz signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 27-year-old appeared in five games for the Mariners in 2020 and surrendered 12 runs over 7.1 innings before being outrighted at the start of September. Grotz will join Boston at big-league spring training and have an outside shot of making the Opening Day roster.
