Astros: What’s wrong with Yuli Gurriel?

Make no mistake, regression was coming for the Astros Yuli Gurriel in 2022. I was confident enough to write about Yuli Gurriel’s possible regression back in January. “Gurriel appears ageless, but expecting a 38 year old (in June) who hit 20 points higher than he ever has in his Major League career to duplicate that feat is not a wise bet in my opinion. That said, the right-hander could regress and still hit .300.”

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Hits first homer

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's 6-1 win over the Nationals. Gurriel hit a two-run shot off Josiah Gray to cap the Astros' five-run first-inning explosion. The homer was just the first of the season for Gurriel in his 28th game of the year. It hasn't been a good year thus far for the 37-year-old first baseman, who's hitting just .210/.252/.343 on the season.

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Resting Sunday

Niko Goodrum will get the nod at first base in place of Gurriel, who went 6-for-37 during that 10-game stretch to drop his season average to .196.

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Tallies rare stolen base

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored Monday against the Rangers. Gurriel helped manufacture offense for Houston in the sixth inning. He reached base with a two-out single and proceeded to steal second base before coming around to score on a Kyle Tucker single. Though Gurriel shouldn't be counted on to provide stolen bases throughout the season, he has started to heat up at the plate, collecting three doubles and three runs scored combined across his last two games.
